Operator Report - Afternoon shift

ITF Found in LOW_NOISE_3 and Science Mode.
At 16:00 UTC I set the ITF in Commissioning mode to allow the planned SQZ investigation, carried out by Zendri, Sorrentino, and De Laurentis. At 16:17 UTC, under the request of the crew, I set the ITF back in LOW_NOISE_3_SQZ to study the behavior. No sudden drops in Hrec_Range_BNS occurred during this period, so it was agreed to keel the ITF back in LOW_NOISE_3_SQZ for the time being. SQZ investigation concluded at 17:00 UTC.
At 17:07 UTC, in agreement with Tringali, I launched the planned ENV Injections with the ITF in LOW_NOISE_3_SQZ. ENV Injections concluded at 17:50 UTC, ITF back in Science Mode from 17:54 UTC. It remained in this configuration for the rest of the shift.

Operator Report - Morning shift

ITF found in LOW_NOISE_3_SQZ and in Science Mode.
From around 5:02 UTC the Hrec_Range_BNS started to heavily fluctuate (see attached plot #1). During the rest of the shift the Hrec_Range_BNS dropped multiple times, thanks to the investigation of Di Renzo it was found a correlation with the Squeezing (see report #64271). At 8:23 UTC I contacted the SQZ expert (De Laurentis), which started the investigation.
From 5:57 UTC to 5:59 UTC I set the ITF in Adjusting mode to allow Nardecchia to perform the planned EM RH step (see report #64269).
At 8:39 UTC, due to a new series of glitches, I put the ITF back in LOW_NOISE_3 (SQZ disengaged), ITF back in Science Mode at 8:41 UTC.
From 9:14 UTC to 9:29 UTC, under request of Sorrentino, I set the ITF back in Adjusting mode to allow further investigation on the SQZ issues, but no clear issues were identified.
From 8:55 UTC to around 12:40 UTC Hrec_Range_BNS remained stable, but from 12:40 UTC another burst of glitches occurred (see attached plot #2). SQZ investigation in progress.
ITF left in LOW_NOISE_3 and in Science Mode.

Operator Report - Afternoon shift

Upon reaching the site, I've found the ITF in LOW_NOISE_3_SQZ and Science Mode.
At 14:00 UTC I set the ITF in Commissioning Mode to allow the planned activity for the afternoon (Characterization for EM RH tuning) carried out by Nardecchia, de Rossi, Melo, Gouaty (see report #64205).
At 14:17 UTC the ITF was unlocked by De Rossi and Melo by performing a kick on the end mirrors, followed by a brief period at LOCKED_ARMS_BEATING (from 14:28 UTC to 14:51 UTC).
At 16:06 UTC we reached CARM_NULL_1F, and we waited one hour before performing the OMC Scan (scan done from 16:08 UTC to 16:31 UTC, see report #64206).
After that we reached LOW_NOISE_2 at 16:50 UTC, we waited 90 minutes to take reference data.

Scan of the OMC in CARM_NULL_1F

Figure 1 shows the scan of the OMC performed from 16h08 utc to 16h30 utc, after waiting for 1 hour in CARM_NULL_1F.

Figure 2 shows a zoom of this scan around a Free Spectral Range.

Assuming a calibration factor of about 4800 for B1_PD3, we have: ~75 mW on the first order mode, ~29 mW on the second order mode, ~200 mW on each of the third and fourth order modes, ~70 mW on each of the 5th and 6th order modes, ...

Figure 1 tries to fit the scan calibrated into MHz, the scan is not well linear so it doesn't work perfectly well. The order 2 mode is crossed at least 4 times during the scan, these are the 4 peaks highlighted, two during the time the temperature is increasing and two during the time the temperature is decreasing. The order 2 mode varies between 19mW and 41mW using the same calibration factor for B1 PD3 of 4800.

ballardin - 11:30 Tuesday 07 May 2024 (64191) Print this report

The process ELE_QGBT interrogates different electrical nodes; when a node does not respond the process automatically goes into the Error state. Obviously, data related to that node is not sent to the DAQ. When the problem disappears, the process automatically goes in the Golden state (so it not necessary to restart the process from VPM) and the slow monitor date is sent again to DAQ.

Today at 10h24 LT I put in operation a new version (v6r9) of this server to try to detect nodes generating problems. In this new version when a node does not respond, the ELE_QGBT goes in Active State and not in Error State.

The unlock at 3:41 UTC could have been due to an earthquake. There was a seismic disturbance in both NEB and WEB at about that time.

ruggi - 11:47 Wednesday 01 May 2024 (64150) Print this report

The earthwquake produced an increase of the seismic component at 1 Hz, which is a problem since the MAR/MIR actuation splitting filters have been changed: the unlock occurred when NE MIR CORR saturated (fig 1). Usually the reason of unlock during an earthquake is the saturation of MAR correction, due to the low frequency component of the surface seismic waves. A magnitude 4 in Croatia is not strong enough to produce a large slow oscillation of the suspension able to push the MAR corrections close to 10 V (fig 2). This kind of unlock would be likely avoided finding a way to restore the old MAR/MIR allocation strategy.

WI CO2 laser change of state

Nicola called me because the WI CO2 laser changed its state (see figure 1).
To address the change in the WI outer power, I first rotated the WI outer ring waveplate to recover the nominal  power to be injected into the ITF (11.59 UTC-12.00.26 UTC ) (ITF in ‘adjusting’ mode). Then, I adjusted the WI chiller set point to return the laser to its usual operating point, in particular I decreased it by 0.01 degrees, from 19.02 to 19.01 (12.21.04 UTC). The BCK chiller set point has been changed accordingly. This action did not solve the problem; in fact, the direction turned out to be wrong.
Thus, at 12.41 UTC, I increased the chiller set point from 19.01 to 19.03 degrees.
Finally, the standard situation has been restored (see fig.2).

ruggi - 12:17 Thursday 18 April 2024 (64016) Print this report

Yesterday at 19:24 UTC the ITF unlocked because of a saturation of WE MIR actuation (fig 1). The correction was progressively increasing in the latest half an hour and it was often very close to 10 V in the latest minutes (fig 2). It was due to an increasing of ground motion between 0.5 and 1 Hz (fig 3), typically due to the weather close to the site (for instance, strong rain or particularly stormy sea). That frequency component was the main responsible of the large correction (fig 4); improving the filters at that frequency has for sure an impact at 1.8 Hz, so any change needs to be tested in terms of stability. There is also the chance that something can be improved at the level of the top stage control, but also in that case, the margin of improvement without worsening other frequency regions is small.

WI CO2 chiller setpoint change

This morning we noticed that the WI main CO2 laser continued to be in an unstable state since last night at around 06.30 UTC, so we decided to act on WI CO2 chiller setpoint, changing it from 19.04 °C to 19.02°C (12.37 UTC, Fig. 1) in order to restore the correct power values. Also the BCK chiller set point has been changed at the same setpoint.

After this change, there have been no significant changes in the powers of the actuators, which have remained stable around their nominal values. The situation will continue to be monitored to determine whether further intervention will be necessary.

Operator Report - Morning shift

Upon reaching the site, I found the ITF relocking, but it kept unlocking during various steps of the locking acqusitition.

At 6:07 UTC I set the ITF in Maintenance Mode, here the list of the activities communicated to the Control Room:

  • Cleaning of Central Building, Laser Lab (external firm managed by Gargiulo);
  • VAC Refill (Vacuum Team);
  • Crane inspections (external firm managed by Bazzi, the approximated timetable is NE: 6:30 UTC, WE: 7:00 UTC, CB: 8:10 UTC, MC: 8:30 UTC);
  • SNEB angular setpoints updated (see report #63979);
  • At 8:00 UTC, Restart of ASC_pre (Casanueva);
  • From 8:30 UTC from 11:10 UTC, PR F0 accelerometer change modulation frequency (see report #63984);
  • Operator Periodic Tasks (see section below);

Periodic Tasks carried out by the Operator:

  • From 5:57 UTC to 6:10 UTC, Check of IMC Working Point and Position;
  • At 6:29 UTC - 5 minutes of OMC Lock in Single Bounce configuration;
  • From 6:37 UTC to 6:58 UTC - OMC Scan in Single Bounce configuration;
  • At 7:30 UTC - TCS Chiller Refill;
  • At 8:00 UTC - TCS Thermal Camera Reference;
  • At around 8:30 UTC - TCS Power Checks (see table below for resuts):
  CH (W) Inner DAS (W)  Outer DAS (W)
W Pickoff 0.295 0 0.206
N Pickoff 0.596 0.052 0.598

To allow the external firm to clean around EIB, the bench was blocked by De Rossi from 8:48 UTC to 9:29 UTC. Due to the ongoing activities (missing laser and PR ID loop open) it was not possible to perform the planned ALS Maintenance.
 After the activity on the PR was concluded we started to relock, but the ITF kept unlocking at various steps of the locking acqusition, possibly due to the worsening of the weather.
Relock in progress.
